Ishikawa Prefecture Tourism Mascot "Hyakumansan"

Hyakumansan was the mascot used for the “Tale of the Ishikawa Hyakumangoku” Hokuriku Shinkansen opening PR campaign. The mascot is a “Kaga Hachiman Oki-agari” Ishikawa folk doll lucky charm, and it features an elaborative design that combines a multitude of culture from Ishikawa capturing the greatness of the Hyakumangoku.

The design incorporates techniques used in Japan’s beloved traditional crafts of Ishikawa including Wajima Lacquerware for the moustache; Kanazawa gold leaf for the body; Kaga Yuzen chrysanthemums and peony; and the five colours of Kutani Ceramics red, yellow, green, dark blue and purple. Furthermore, not only are there traditional features, but also Ishikawa’s prized advanced technology with the carbon fibre constructed body.

In addition, drawings of Kenrokuen Garden’s stone lantern, Mt. Hakusan, Noto Kiriko floats and other places of interest from Ishikawa can be found on Hyakumansan’s body, making him truly a mascot to represent the whole prefecture.

Hyakumansan continues to promote the prefecture engaging in PR activities showing the brilliance of Ishikawa.
