On November 19th, an opening ceremony was held at the Ishikawa Zoo for the Satoyama Crested Ibis House, a new public exhibit for the Crested Ibis, a nationally protected species.

This is the first dedicated Crested Ibis exhibit on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

At the opening ceremony, Governor Tanimoto gave a speech, expressing his hope that the opening of the Crested Ibis house “will be an opportunity for people to think about the importance of preserving the Crested Ibis and creating environments in which they can thrive”. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, visitors crowded in to observe the birds spreading their beautiful pink wings and resting on perches.

The Satoyama Crested Ibis House consists of an approximately 500 square meter caged enclosure designed to imitate the Crested Ibis’s natural woodland environment, as well as a learning display corner. The Crested Ibises can be observed in their habitat from each of the four observation points surrounding the enclosure. At the learning display corner, you learn more about the Crested Ibis while enjoying various activities, such as touching real Crested Ibis feathers.
